How do I measure content marketing success?

Like all plans this depends on the objectives you set yourself at the start of the programme or campaign, it’s also impacted by how close your marketing and sales/commercial systems are linked but the ultimate aim we are looking for is a conversion.

This is where monitoring tools such as Google Analytics or Social mention are very useful. Facebook and Twitter also offer online statistics.

In your content strategy you will have set key performance indicators (KPIs) for your content marketing programme, so you need to be able to measure its performance to see if meets your success criteria.

With the right metrics in place, you can continuously review your activities to determine what’s working and what isn’t. By knowing which campaigns and pieces of content have the most impact, you can increase activity where it makes sense and cut out wasted effort elsewhere.

Metrics that can be used to track progress include:

  • Web analytics
  • Blog traffic
  • Email click-through rates, downloads, and unsubscribe rates
  • Numbers and quality of new leads generated
  • Conversion rates

A proportion of incoming leads will be deemed ready to hand over to your sales reps, while others will remain in the marketing database for further nurturing (e.g. via regular email marketing).

Lead nurturing means conducting an ongoing “staying in touch” programme for those leads not immediately ready to engage with your sales team. Drip-feeding relevant content to those contacts over time will help to educate them as well as build credibility and trust. The key is to deliver content that is truly useful, and not to bombard your prospects with too many emails.

By staying in regular contact with potential customers, you will keep your product or service at the front of their minds, increasing the probability that they will contact you when they are ready to move on to the next step.
