How do I generate leads from my website?

Most visitors to your website won’t be ready to make a decision, they’ll be researching their options. So you need to ensure your web content answers their questions and you need to offer the opportunity for them to get in contact with you and/or provide them with an option to provide their email address in exchange for something they’ll deem to be of value.

If your website is properly optimised for the search engines, searchers will find your pages through organic search. By producing regular quality content that’s relevant for your audience, adding it to your site and promoting it via social media or paid advertising more people will see that content and click through to your site.

This content can be in the form of a blog, an article or video etc. The beauty of lead generation using inbound marketing techniques is that it generates sales leads without you having to cold-call anyone. Prospective customers find your content through their search or social media activity, and the way they interact with it provides clues about what they’re interested in knowing about your business.

Crucial elements that contribute to inbound lead generation success:

  1. Ensure each web page includes your contact details, a primary (and perhaps) secondary Call To Action (CTA), a lead capture form and if possible a client testimonial. Adding video can also increase conversion rates.
  2. Dedicated landing pages: A dedicated web page with a registration form that captures a few contact details in exchange for a valuable piece of content.
  3. The offer: Must be perceived to be valuable enough for a person to provide contact details in exchange for it. Typical examples are ebooks, webinars, demos or free consultations.
  4. The call to action: To bring people to your landing page, you need a visible and compelling call to action, such as a text box, image or button that links directly to the landing page.

By the time you first contact an inbound lead, you already know they’re interested in your business, because they will have visited your landing page and registered to receive your content. This saves a lot of time and effort and helps to build trust and credibility earlier in the communications process.

Whatever campaigns you’re running please don’t send your audience to your website home page. It won’t be tailored to your offer. The best practice is to build specific landing pages focused on the campaign with a clear call to action (CTA) e.g. Book Now, or Download the brochure.

If for any reason you can’t do that, send your audience to the page that’s most specific to what’s on offer e.g. if you run a hotel that’s offering a weekend package, send them to the accommodation and tariff page. Don’t expect your visitors to do all of the work – they won’t. Make it as easy as possible for them and you’ll see the benefits.
