How do I improve my lead conversion rate?

It’s an all-too-familiar story for a lot of marketers. A lead generation campaign is hugely successful, resulting in a deluge of new contacts. But soon after all the juicy contact details are handed to the sales team, the complaints start coming back: “Why did you send over those lousy leads?”

The reason, of course, is that not every contact you get is ready to purchase straightaway.

I’m surprised on a regular basis with people who think the collection of leads is the end game – it’s only the beginning. Not everyone who visits your site may be in buying mode (hint: but they probably will be at a later date).

Generally, contacts get fed into the sales funnel and many businesses operate on the “wing and a prayer” method that those contacts flow through the funnel magically becoming leads, then prospects and then a sale. Don’t leave it all to chance, nurture those leads through the pipeline by engaging with them, and provide additional information that may help them decide to become a customer. This can be automated through email autoresponders.

By understanding from the outset what constitutes a “lead” you can rank those leads as they progress through the funnel and prioritise the opportunities, nurturing them until they become sales ready.

A lead scoring process enables you to rank each lead for quality and prioritise them accordingly. The sales-ready leads get handed over to the sales team, and the others are inducted into a lead-nurturing programme until they’re ready to buy.  Sales conversion rates go up, sales are happy, and less money and resource is spent on chasing up leads that won’t convert.
