What is Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing uses social networking websites or platforms as a marketing tool in order to gain traffic, raise brand awareness or promote products and services. Social media marketing is driven by content that users promote and share with their network to amplify messages and broaden customer reach.
Do I need a social media marketing plan?
Absolutely yes. It’s very easy to get sidetracked and to spend too much time in areas that are not providing a return. Having a written plan reduces the likelihood of this happening. Social media marketing is closely connected to content marketing and SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and your plan should consider the relationship between these activities.
Reaching out to your audience wherever they are active will help to create a stronger brand presence in the market and allow you to listen to your customers (and competitors) but social media needs to be seen as part of the total plan and should be used as an integral part of your marketing strategy.
How much time should I spend on social media marketing
Social media is about interaction and the more time and effort you invest into that endeavour, the more you are likely to gain (as long as your audience are active on the platforms you’re targeting). It’s not a broadcast medium where you can just launch a one-way dialogue and expect positive results.
At the end of the day, the question you should always be asking yourself is “does this make sense for my business”?
What skills do I need to successfully manage a social media marketing programme?
Social media marketing is not a technology. The key to success is not in which buttons are pressed (although it’s useful to know) but in how the plan is effectively created, implemented and managed. Therefore key skills include knowledge of the marketplace, an in-depth understanding of the needs of your audience, experience of marketing planning, social media, content marketing and SEO.
How do I get started in Social Media Marketing?
Social media is not a magic bullet that will instantly help your business grow. It can be a hard slog and it takes time, effort and budget. So before you get started you need to ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I have the necessary skills to get involved in this venture?
- Am I able to devote the time needed to succeed?
- Should I outsource this activity?
- Do I have the budget needed?
There are plenty of resources available on the internet that will explain how to get started on each platform but if you don’t have the time, then bring someone in from outside who can help.
How do I create a social media marketing plan?
The stages of a social media marketing plan are no different to any other marketing plan. There are 5 key steps to consider:
- Understand your company’s current situation
- Understand your target audience
- Set your objectives
- Develop a communications strategy (including platforms and budget)
- Implement the plan and measure the outcome
How do I measure the success of my social media marketing activities?
Measuring the ROI of social media can be difficult but not impossible. However, you need to start out with a plan and a view of what success will look like prior to implementing your social media activities. Then at least you will be able to make a comparison between expectations and achievement.
There are an ever increasing number of packages becoming available that let you track how your prospects and customers are engaging with your social media content. The key point to understand is, don’t just measure for measurement’s sake.
Determine the purpose of your content up front and use the appropriate platforms/packages to measure the interaction relevant to your goals and objectives. Remember that your visitors will be at differing stages within the buying cycle and you will need to consider different metrics for each of those stages.
